Shifting Gears from Curious to Furious

Overreactions to trivial matters, repeatedly making bad decisions, acting out of selfishness and insecurity—many times, when we see people in our lives do these things, it's easy to respond with anger. In a recent "Ask Me Anything" episode of the Order of Man podcast, Kipp Sorenson shared a valuable alternative: "get curious, not furious".

This approach not only eases conflicts but also helps us connect on a deeper level and understand the reasons behind these reactions.

  1. Recognize Your Queue: Give yourself a moment to breathe when you feel anger rising. This pause can be the gateway to curiosity.
  2. Inquire Gently: Ask thoughtful questions and seek to understand their frustration rather than expressing yours.
  3. Self-Assess: Reflect on what your reaction says about you - where is this anger really coming from?
  4. Embrace Learning: Every challenging encounter is an opportunity to learn more about yourself, human behavior and leadership.

While we don’t have to condone or affirm every reaction, striving to understand can greatly improve all our interactions. Let’s learn how embracing curiosity can lead to better outcomes for everyone.
