Early in my self-development days, I would only consume non-fiction, self-help books. It seemed to be doing the trick but I became more consumed with the amount of books I read at the expense of actually improving my life. Then a friend encouraged me to read fiction every once in a while. Shortly thereafter, my friend Jack Carr, released his first book, Terminal List – which I devoured.
And, Jack Carr is back with me again to talk about his newest book, Cry Havoc. But we talk a whole lot more than just the book. We cover how best to cultivate a new skill set (be it writing or something else), the importance of exercising the brain, making yourself better through wisdom, worrying about only what you can control, and the value of fictional work on your self-development journey.
Jack Carr is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and former Navy SEAL, whose two decades in Naval Special Warfare give his thriller the grit and realism so many of us have come to expect. He first shot to national prominence with The Terminal List, a high-stakes series starring James Reece—now adapted into a hit Prime Video series portrayed by Chris Pratt. He has followed it with book, Red Sky Mourning, Only the Dead, In the Blood, The Devil’s Hand, Savage Son, and True Believer. Jack also hosts the popular Danger Close podcast and routinely tours bookstores for live Q&A events.
In his newest book, Cry Havoc (out today), Jack Carr dives into the covert wars of 1968. amid global tension, the Vietnamese conflict, and Cold War intrigue, Cry Havoc mixes intense combat, espionage, and moral complexity in Carr’s most ambitious thriller yet.
We all know the scriptural reference of Iron Sharpening Iron (Proverbs 27:17) but what does it even mean? And, do you have the type of men in your life you can sharpen yourself against? The likely answer is “no.” Most men don’t. And, so, as the inevitabilities of life take place, most men have nowhere to turn, no sounding board to bounce ideas off of, no friends to be pushed and motivated by, and no accountability to be had.
But that’s where the Iron Council comes into play – it’s a training ground for life. One where you’ll work together through applicable challenges and assignments, where you’ll meet other men who are committed to improving their lives and yours, and a place where you’ll be tested but the men to see if you have and what you need to make the most out of being a father, husband, business owner, and leader in your community. And, we’re open right now! Band with us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.
