Cornell: Where Have the Real Men Gone? | FRIDAY FIELD NOTES

HOME > PODCAST ARCHIVE

The headlines surrounding the Cornell sexual assault allegations sent shockwaves across national media, sparking immediate online outrage and rapid commentary. While social media users quickly took sides, a deeper and far more urgent discussion was left completely unexamined. The situation at Cornell exposes a fundamental breakdown in modern culture: our inability to separate legal culpability from moral responsibility, alongside a knee-jerk reaction to blame all of masculinity for the disgraceful actions of unprincipled men.

Legal Culpability vs. Moral Responsibility

In any legal matter, due process must remain sacred. If an investigation yields evidence that individuals committed sexual assault, the full weight of the law should be applied. However, legal guilt is only one dimension of the issue. Regardless of formal legal outcomes, the behavior revealed in this case demonstrates a severe moral failure. Exploiting someone who is mentally or physically compromised is disgusting and indefensible. True men do not look for opportunities to take advantage of the vulnerable; their duty is to protect, provide, and preside.

The Flawed Anti-Male Narrative

Mainstream culture often leverages events like this to promote a broad narrative: that masculinity itself is toxic, evil, or a disorder. This conclusion is deeply flawed. When society repeatedly conditions young men to sit down, stay quiet, and suppress their natural drives toward competition and strength, it neuters them rather than molding them. Yet, when crises occur, that same culture hypocritically asks, "Where have all the real men gone?" You cannot systematically weaken men for decades and then expect them to step up as courageous leaders when danger arises.

Masculinity vs. Manliness

Solving this crisis requires understanding the fundamental difference between raw masculinity and developed manliness. Masculinity is amoral—it consists of biological traits common to men, including physical aggression, dominance, and competitiveness. Manliness, by contrast, occurs when raw masculinity is infused with righteousness, objective morality, and virtue. Raw masculinity without moral direction produces chaos, but channeled masculinity produces firefighters running into burning buildings, fathers shielding their households, and leaders upholding justice.

How Men Must Lead Forward

Restoring true manliness requires immediate action on three distinct fronts:

  1. Stop Outsourcing Morality: Stop relying on governments, pop culture, or public consensus to define right and wrong. Stand firm on objective, unshakeable truth.
  2. Police Your Circle: Be your brother's keeper. When you see fellow men acting dishonorably or dishonestly, confront them directly and enforce high standards.
  3. Model Virtuous Leadership: Demonstrate discipline, situational awareness, honor, and self-control in front of your children and community every day.

The world does not suffer from an excess of masculinity; it suffers from a shortage of righteous, disciplined men who transform raw strength into purposeful leadership.
