If You Can't Communicate, You Can't Win | FRIDAY FIELD NOTES

Communication is one of the most powerful tools we have. It allows us to connect with people, share ideas, build relationships, rally people around a common cause, keep people safe, and create opportunities.

But communication can also become the thing that holds you back.

In this episode of Friday Field Notes, Ryan breaks down five practical ways men can become more effective communicators—not by simply talking more, but by becoming more intentional about how they use their words, listen, and connect with others.

The 5 Keys to Better Communication

1. Say less but mean more.
Use your words deliberately. The more you talk without meaning or purpose, the less weight your words carry. Ryan explains how finding the “minimum effective dose” in communication can make your words more valuable and make people more likely to listen.

2. Listen to understand, nothing else.
Your job isn't always to formulate a comeback, defend your position, or solve someone's problem. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is listen, ask clarifying questions, and make the other person feel heard and understood.

3. Match your tone to the stakes at hand.
Effective communication requires you to adapt your tone, cadence, pace, and enthusiasm to what the other person is experiencing. Ryan shares examples involving his son, his wife, and everyday conversations to illustrate why matching someone's emotional context helps build trust and connection.

4. Use small talk as leverage.
Small talk isn't necessarily a waste of time. Even when you don't personally care about the subject, showing genuine interest in what matters to someone else can create connection, deepen relationships, and build influence.

5. Own your words.
Have opinions. Express your ideas. Be willing to make decisions and communicate them clearly. But remember that your words carry weight only when your actions support them. If you say you're going to do something, follow through.

Ultimately, communication is a tool that can either unlock opportunities or become the thing keeping you from getting what you want.

Communication is your key or your killer. You get to decide.
