You change the oil or you replace the engine. There's no third option where you ignore it and the engine just runs great forever.
You know this about a truck. But the same applies to everything of value in your life.
Your body is on a maintenance schedule whether you're keeping it or not. So is your marriage. So is your relationship with each of your kids. So is your standing with the men who'd show up if you called. None of it fails suddenly. It fails like an engine fails, quietly for a long time, then all at once at the worst possible moment.
That's what routine is. Not self-improvement. Maintenance on the things you can't afford to replace.
And it never feels urgent, because you do it before anything is wrong. Nothing pushes you into the gym on a Tuesday or into a hard conversation on a night when everything's fine. You have to choose it against zero pressure. That's why most men don't.
They wait for the pressure. By then it isn't maintenance, it's repair. Repair costs ten times as much and doesn't always work.
So pick the thing you've been deferring longest. You already know what it is. You thought of it in the first paragraph.
Put it on the schedule this week, while nothing is wrong.
That's the whole point. You do it while nothing is wrong.
