Every fall a farmer sets aside the best of his harvest and doesn't touch it.

That's the seed corn. It's next year's crop. He can be hungry in February with a full bin of it, and he still won't eat it, because a man who eats his seed corn gets one more winter and no spring.

Plenty of men are eating theirs and calling it a good year.

Every dollar earned gets spent. Every free hour goes to a screen. Every bit of energy is gone before they walk in their own door...

Nothing is wrong yet, which is why nobody notices. Break-even looks a lot like doing fine until the season turns.

A man is supposed to produce more than he consumes. The difference is what he lives on when winter comes, and what everyone counting on him lives on too.
