The first scrape showed up on his dad's front bumper two years ago.
"Somebody clipped me at the grocery store."
Then there was a dent in the passenger door. Then a broken taillight. Every mark got the same story… some other driver did it.
His dad is eighty-one. My friend knew exactly what was going on. He'd walk past the car every weekend and count. But this 48-year-old man was too afraid to come right out and have that hard conversation with his dad.
He offered to drive once. His dad gave him a look, and that was the end of it.
"I'm not going to war with my dad over a car," he told me. So he didn't. He hoped the doctor or the DMV would do it for him.
In March, his dad drove straight through a red light. He must never have seen it.
A truck coming through swerved, caught the rear bumper, and tore it clean off. It was a miracle his dad walked away.
My friend looked at the accident report and did the math. A split second later and his dad would have been broadsided at 55 mph.
He'd put off that hard conversation for two years. That afternoon it almost cost him his father.
He told me he never thought of it as fear. He thought he was keeping the peace.
Fear is driving something in every one of us, and it almost never looks like fear. That's why you have to go looking for yours, and deal with it before you're the one doing the math.
